Match Report
Match Report - 03 Oct 2009, WEST HERTS HOCKEY CLUB Mens 3XI lost to Stevenage 2
This was a disappointing result, especially after we put together our best hockey of the season so far in the first half.
All that was missing during that period was a goal, and in truth this stemmed from impatient approach play in the final third of the pitch with too many passes being underhit or inaccurate.
The defence in the first period was a model of discipline and cohesion with the visitors being allowed no time or space on the ball in the Stags "23".
We turned round optimistic of getting a win and things continued pretty much as they had in the first half, up until Stevenage were gifted an opener via an uncharacteristic error by Graeme Welch, whose underpowered pass across the D set up the Stevenage centre forward with an easy chance in front of Dan Joseph.
A second defensive lapse ten minutes later allowed an unmarked attacker to slot home from close range on the left.
We were still hoping to salvage a draw at this stage, but a third goal for the visitors came from a well worked short corner, although the "shot" was suspiciously close to a hit rather than a flick as it was slotted high into the net.
A fourth goal was a little unjust as the game did not refelct the scoreline.
Ben Shapiro was voted Man of the Match for his good efforts at left back.
